Crime Prevention: Roanoke Police to Provide VIN Etching This Weekend

The Roanoke Police Department is having their annual spring VIN (vehicle identification number) etching in the parking lot of Target at Valley View Mall on Saturday, May 13, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00pm.

Scott Leamon, Crime Prevention Specialist for Roanoke City Police, reports that their department has averaged 16 stolen vehicles cases per month in Roanoke since 2011, although that number has dropped during the first four months of 2017.

VIN etching is one of the most effective anti-theft tools available and greatly reduces the chance that your vehicle will be stolen.  VIN plates on the dash and body of the vehicle are easily altered and replaced, making stolen vehicles very difficult to recover or detect.

Officers will also be providing additional theft prevention information at the event.
