BREAKING: Man with gun shuts down I-95 in Richmond

Part of I-95 in Richmond was closed for several hours yesterday after police say an armed man threatened to kill himself. 

According to WRIC, Henrico Pollice found an occupied vehicles in the 800 block of E. Parham road shortly after 3:00 p.m.  Police say the driver sped off in a reckless manner while speaking to an officer.  Another officer saw the car and attempted to stop it and that is when a chase ensued. 

The chase ended on I-95 near the Belvidere exit when the vehicle crashed.  Officers found the driver, a man, with a handgun threatening himself.  Officers approached the car and found the man had self-inflicted wounds.  He was taken to a local hospital. 

Police have not released the man's identify.

March 21, 2018 - Interstate 95 in Richmond has closed near the Belvidere exit after a police chase ended with an armed subject threatening to kill himself, police said.

Dozens of police cars, including state police and Henrico Police vehicles, can be seen on traffic cameras with traffic backed up in both directions.

According to police, the incident began in Henrico when a suspect fled from a traffic stop.

Police said the pursuit came to a stop on I-95 and the suspect is now making threats to kill himself. WRIC in Richmond reported that the suspect has attempted "suicide by cop" in the past.
