Virginia Doctor Facing 714 Federal Drug Charges; License Suspended

A Martisnville doctor's license has been suspended while he is waiting trial on more than 700 federal drug charges.

The Virginia Board of Medicine suspended the license of Joel A. Smithers, a doctor of osteopathic medicine, on March 10, 2018, according to public records. 

According to an indictment issued against Smithers in December 217, he's charged with one count of possessing with intent to distribute the following Schedule II controlled substances:  two dosage units of hydrocodone, 92 dosage units of hydromorphone, 19 dosage units of oxycodone, 353 dosage units of oxymorphone, one dosage unit of methadone and 102 dosage units of morphine.
