Midterm elections are coming up soon and Lyft wants to help more people get out to vote. The ride-hailing app will be offering free and discontinued rides to get voters to the polls in November.
The hope is that promo codes for 50% off rides through groups like When We All Vote and Vote.org will get bigger numbers of voters to their polling places for the midterms. Free rides will be available through Voto Latino to make it easier for underserved communities to get to voting locations.
According to Mike Masserman, head of social impact at Lyft, transportation has been given as a reason some people don’t vote, especially young and poorer voters. He says, “We want to be able to get to as many people as possible.”
Over 15 million people cited transportation as their primary barrier to voting in the 2016 election — that’s why we’re introducing The Ride to Vote.
