BREAKING: Potential Dam Failure In Carroll County

People in Carroll County are being asked to evacuate due to imminent failure of a dam just north of Piper's Gap Road in Carroll County. 

If the dam were to fail the water depth could be up to 15 feet -- but would attenuate in depth downstream.

The National Weather Service in BLACKSBURG has issued a* Flash Flood Warning for...A Dam Break in...Southwestern Carroll County in southwestern Virginia...The City of Galax in southwestern Virginia...Southeastern Grayson County in southwestern Virginia...* Until 930 PM EDT* 

At 331 PM EDT, local emergency management reported the imminent failure of an unnamed dam just north of Pipers Gaps Road insouthwest Carroll County. The dam has not undergone a completefailure yet but is considered to be in imminent danger.

Flood waters from a failure would move down the stream below the damand will reach Wards Mill Branch and then flow into Chesnut Creek.

If the dam were to fail the water depth just below the dam could beup to about 15 feet or more deep but would attenuate in depthdownstream. As the water enters Wards Mill Branch and then Chesnut Creek, flood depths would be considerably lower but exactly how muchis unknown at this time.
