Ringgold Woman Sentenced: Drowned Baby and Left in Duffel Bag for Years

A Ringgold woman has been sentenced to 14 years behind bars for killing her baby in 2014.

Police said they responded to Schoolfield Drive in June 2016 in reference to an infant who had been found dead in a duffel bag.

Search warrants show the infant was found in a bag at the home after the mother's ex-boyfriend opened the bag and found the "deceased infant that had been dead for some time."

Vanessa Danielle Poteat, 26, has been charged with first-degree murder in the drowning death of her newborn, police said.

Investigators said Poteat concealed her pregnancy and the child's birth before drowning the newborn.
