Virginia residents now have the offer to upgrade their driver's licenses or other IDs to meet federal standards that will affect plane travelers starting in 2020.
Currently, Virginia licenses aren't compliant with the federal REAL ID program which was enacted after the September 11 attacks. Beginning in October 2020, non compliant IDs will not be sufficient to board planes or enter secure military bases.
Along with standard fees, there is a $10 surcharge for the upgrade.
Residents must apply in person and provide physical documentation of their identity, legal presence in the U.S., Social Security number and two proofs of residency.
If someone chooses to not upgrade their licences, the Virginia DMV assures residents that they can use their passports to board flights.
