Christiansburg: 25-Year-Old Man Charged After Child In His Care Dies

Christiansburg Police said a man has been charged after a two-year-old boy died after a recent fall.

Police said officers with the police department and rescue squad were called to the 400 block of Zinc Lane on Friday, January 11 around 9:15 p.m. for a child who had fallen and was unresponsive.

They said officers found a two-year-old boy lying unresponsive on the floor.

First responders immediately began CPR and a heartbeat was detected after several minutes. The child was taken to the hospital by ambulance and later airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Police said the child remained unresponsive throughout the weekend before succumbing to his injuries on Sunday around 7:40 p.m.

An investigation by police revealed that the child's injuries were not consistent with a fall, as initially reported.

McKenzie Kyle Hellman, 25, of Christiansburg, has been charged with one count of felony child abuse.

Hellman, who is not related to the child, was watching the boy at the time.

Hellman is currently being held without bond at the Montgomery County Jail. Additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
