The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began accepting income tax returns on Monday, January 28, 2019. They said more than 150 million returns are expected this year nationwide.
The Virginia Department of Taxation says you can file for your state refund, but they "will not be able to start processing returns immediately."
It's due to the Virginia General Assembly currently debating the Commonwealth’s response to the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act from 2017. Virginia has a $1.2 billion surplus because of changes to the federal tax code. Governor Northam wants to use the money to provide a fully refundable tax credit to families making $54,000 or less and to distribute extra money to schools, improving water quality, and improve universal broadband access.
Republicans said that would result in higher taxes for more than 600,000 middle-class taxpayers.
