Suspect arrested in abduction incident in Pulaski, more charges pending

Around 6:30 a.m. Saturday Pulaski Police Department officers were called to the 100 block of Prince Avenue in reference to a disturbance reported as a possible abduction.

Police said two people reported that they had been held against their will at gunpoint for approximately 8 hours the previous night and had finally managed to escape just before calling 911.

As officers arrived to the area, Corporal A.S. Thompson said he observed a vehicle matching the description of the one given by the victims in front of a residence in the 100 block of Prince Avenue.

Cpl. Thompson said as he approached the vehicle, the driver abruptly drove off.

Cpl. Thompson said he observed it drive behind a house and then crash into a creek bed.

Investigators said that's when Matthew Ray Russell, 33, of Galax ran out of the vehicle behind the residence near where the truck had just crashed.

Police said Russell ran across a creek and into the woods behind Cool Springs pond.

A press release states that officers established a perimeter around the area and requested K-9 teams from Virginia State Police to assist with searching for Russell.
