Virginia teen gets the golden ticket on "American Idol"

A Virginia teen from Midlothian got her big break Wednesday on American Idol, after impressing the judges with her rendition of "Rise Up" by Andra Day.

Shayy Winn, 18, wowed the judges, bringing Lionel Richie to tears with her performance and story of perseverance.

Leading up to her moment on stage, the teen and her story have been heavily featured in promotions and advertisements for the show.

Before this enormous win though, she had to hear words no one wants to hear.

When the high school student started having vision problems, doctors discovered a brain tumor was causing it.

Over the last year, she lost her sight to the tumor, and her story was enough for the judges to give her a fighting chance at going to Hollywood.

After becoming legally blind, she says she realized there was "another whole side to life she never knew about."
